The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has emerged victorious in the Mohali Municipal Corporation elections, winning 27 out of 50 wards and establishing itself as the dominant political force in the city. The result marks another major electoral success for Mohali MLA Kulwant Singh, who has now overseen back-to-back victories for the party in both the Panchayat elections and the Municipal Corporation polls.
The outcome reflects the growing organisational strength of the Aam Aadmi Party in Mohali and highlights the effectiveness of its grassroots campaign. Despite facing competition from Congress, BJP, Shiromani Akali Dal and several Independent candidates, the party succeeded in winning a majority of wards and emerged as the clear winner of the civic polls.
However, Mohali’s verdict was not an isolated result. Across Punjab, the Aam Aadmi Party emerged as the dominant political force in municipal elections, winning 958 seats. Congress secured 397 seats, Independent candidates won 251 seats, Shiromani Akali Dal claimed 192 seats, BJP won 172 seats, while BSP managed 7 seats. The statewide results have reinforced the position of the Aam Aadmi Party as Punjab’s leading political force in urban local body elections.
Political observers view the results as a significant endorsement of the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, Aam Aadmi Party National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal, and Punjab In-Charge Manish Sisodia. The Mohali result, therefore, forms part of a much larger statewide trend that saw the Aam Aadmi Party outperform all major rivals across Punjab. The party’s strong performance across municipal bodies is being viewed as a validation of both its governance model and its organisational strength at the grassroots level.
Aam Aadmi Party Dominates Mohali
According to the final results, the Aam Aadmi Party won 27 wards, while Congress secured 11 wards, Independent candidates won 5 wards, Shiromani Akali Dal captured 4 wards, and BJP managed to win 3 wards. The numbers clearly indicate that while opposition parties retained influence in certain pockets, none were able to challenge the city-wide presence established by the Aam Aadmi Party.
The victory is being seen as a reflection of years of organisational work carried out by the party’s local leadership. Since becoming MLA, Kulwant Singh has focused heavily on strengthening booth-level structures, expanding the party’s reach in both urban and rural areas of the constituency and maintaining regular engagement with residents.
Victory Could Have Been Even Bigger
An analysis of the ward-wise results suggests that the Aam Aadmi Party’s victory could have been even larger.
The party narrowly lost seven wards by margins of less than 100 votes, indicating that a relatively small shift in voter preference could have pushed its tally well beyond the 30-seat mark.
The closely contested wards included:
Ward 14 – Congress won by 90 votes
Ward 20 – Congress won by 39 votes
Ward 22 – Shiromani Akali Dal won by 27 votes
Ward 35 – Independent candidate won by 89 votes
Ward 41 – BJP won by 35 votes
Ward 48 – BJP won by 56 votes
Ward 49 – BJP won by 94 votes
These results demonstrate that the contest was far more competitive than the final seat tally suggests and that the Aam Aadmi Party remained in contention across nearly every part of the city.
Massive Margins in Key Wards
The election also witnessed several commanding victories for Aam Aadmi Party candidates.
Some of the party’s biggest wins included:
Ward 2 – Rajinder Parsad Sharma won by 807 votes
Ward 43 – Ramandeep Kaur won by 560 votes
Ward 23 – Rajni Goyal won by 510 votes
Ward 38 – Bachan Singh Boparai won by 508 votes
Ward 42 – Sarabjeet Singh Samana won by 458 votes
Ward 5 – Arvinder Kaur won by 444 votes
Ward 8 – Gurmukh Singh Sohal won by 433 votes
These impressive margins underline the depth of support enjoyed by the party in several sectors and residential areas of Mohali.
Key Political Messages from the Election
The election produced several significant political developments. One of the biggest upsets came in Ward 10, where Independent candidate Paramjit Singh Kahlon defeated Congress candidate Kanwar Bir Singh Sidhu, son of former Punjab Cabinet Minister Balbir Singh Sidhu, by 131 votes. The result became one of the most discussed outcomes of the election and highlighted the importance of local issues and candidate credibility in municipal politics.
At the same time, several prominent Aam Aadmi Party candidates recorded comfortable victories, strengthening the party’s position ahead of the selection of the next Mayor of Mohali.
A Victory for the Party, A Validation of Local Leadership
While Mohali MLA Kulwant Singh played a key role in leading the party’s local campaign and organisational efforts, the Municipal Corporation result also forms part of a much larger statewide mandate that saw the Aam Aadmi Party emerge as the leading force in urban local body elections across Punjab.
For the party leadership, the victory reinforces the political momentum generated after the Panchayat elections. For Mohali, it confirms the growing influence of the Aam Aadmi Party in city politics and provides the party with a strong platform to shape the future direction of the Municipal Corporation.
As the focus now shifts towards the formation of the new civic administration and the selection of the Mayor, the results have delivered a clear message: the Aam Aadmi Party remains the dominant political force in Mohali, and its success is closely aligned with the broader momentum being witnessed across Punjab.
