Mohali:
Work has begun on a major sewerage infrastructure project in Mohali aimed at addressing recurring blockages and strengthening the underground drainage network in Phase 7, Phase 3B2 and nearby areas.
The project involves the installation of a 700-mm RCC pipeline with HDP inner lining from Chawla Chowk to Mataur Chowk. The work has been taken up at an estimated cost of ₹1.45 crore and is expected to be completed within six months.
Mohali MLA Kulwant Singh inaugurated the project on Friday and said the new pipeline would provide a long-term solution to sewerage problems being faced by residents in the area.
Residents of Phase 7 and surrounding localities have faced repeated blockages in the existing sewerage network, resulting in inconvenience and disruption to normal civic life. The new high-capacity pipeline is intended to improve the flow of sewage and reduce the frequency of such problems.
Speaking during the inauguration, Kulwant Singh said the project was planned with the area’s long-term requirements in mind. He said the upgraded line, if properly maintained, could serve the locality for several decades and provide more reliable sewerage services to residents.
The project is significant because several parts of Mohali’s older residential areas are dealing with increasing pressure on civic infrastructure. As the city’s population and built-up areas have expanded, existing sewerage networks in some localities have come under greater strain.
The new pipeline is expected to add capacity to the system and improve the overall functioning of the sewerage network along the affected route. The work will also include associated infrastructure required for the pipeline, including manholes and road gullies.
Local civic representatives were present during the inauguration, including Mayor Sarabjit Singh Samana, Senior Deputy Mayor RP Sharma, Deputy Mayor Harpal Singh Channa and councillor Paramjit Singh Kahlo, along with municipal officials and other local representatives.
For residents, the main expectation from the project is a permanent reduction in sewerage blockages rather than repeated short-term repairs. Timely completion and proper maintenance of the new infrastructure will therefore be important to ensure that the intended benefits reach the surrounding neighbourhoods.
The project also comes at a time when upgrading basic civic infrastructure has become increasingly important for Mohali. Along with roads, storm-water drainage and water supply, underground sewerage networks form a critical part of the city’s urban infrastructure but often receive less public attention because much of the system remains below ground.
Once completed, the new connection between Chawla Chowk and Mataur Chowk is expected to strengthen sewerage services in the surrounding residential areas and provide additional capacity for future requirements. With construction now underway, residents will be watching the progress of the project over the coming months. If the work is completed within the six-month schedule and the new line performs as expected, it could provide significant relief to localities that have been dealing with recurring sewerage problems.
