Mohali: Mohali MLA Kulwant Singh has announced financial assistance for three meritorious students from economically weaker families who have qualified NEET and secured admission to medical colleges.

The three students studied at Punjab’s Meritorious Schools and have now taken an important step towards their dream of becoming doctors. Recognising their academic achievement and financial difficulties, Kulwant Singh has decided to help them with their education-related expenses.

The students are Mehakdeep Singh from Alamwala village in Sri Muktsar Sahib district, Aman Singh from Malout and Sumandeep Kaur from Hauz Gandhar village in Fazilka district.

Mehakdeep Singh has secured admission to Gian Sagar Medical College in Banur. The total cost of his medical education, including hostel expenses, is estimated at around Rs 32 lakh. After accounting for the scholarship and education loan available to him, the remaining requirement is around Rs 13.5 lakh, which Kulwant Singh has committed to support.

Aman Singh has secured admission to Medical College Faridkot. He will receive financial assistance of around Rs 14 lakh towards his educational expenses.

Sumandeep Kaur, who has also secured admission to a medical college, will receive financial assistance of around Rs 3 lakh to help cover her hostel expenses.

The total financial assistance announced for the three students is around Rs 30.5 lakh.

The support is particularly significant for students from families where the cost of professional education can become a major barrier. Qualifying NEET is a major achievement, but securing a medical seat is only the beginning, with tuition, hostel, books, travel and other expenses adding to the financial burden.

Kulwant Singh said that talented students should not be forced to give up their educational goals because of financial difficulties. He emphasised the importance of supporting hardworking students and helping them continue their studies when they demonstrate the ability and determination to succeed.

All three students have an academic connection with Punjab’s Meritorious Schools, which provide educational opportunities to talented students, particularly those from financially weaker backgrounds.

For the students and their families, the financial assistance can provide additional support at a crucial stage of their education. With their medical admissions secured, they can now focus on adapting to college life and completing the demanding course of study ahead.

The development also highlights the financial challenges faced by many students who qualify competitive examinations such as NEET. While scholarships and education loans can reduce part of the burden, families may still struggle to arrange the remaining amount required for medical education.

Support from individuals, institutions and community organisations can help bridge this gap and allow deserving students to continue their education.

The three NEET qualifiers will now begin their journey towards careers in the medical profession. Their success in the entrance examination, combined with the financial assistance announced for their education, is expected to help them move forward without allowing financial constraints to overshadow their academic ambitions. The initiative also sends a wider message that academic merit and determination deserve support, particularly when students from modest backgrounds manage to secure opportunities in highly competitive professional courses.
