Punjab’s cricketing calendar entered a new chapter on Sunday as the first-ever Sher-e-Punjab T20 Cricket League was inaugurated at the PCA Cricket Stadium in Mohali. Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann attended the inaugural ceremony and welcomed the launch of the franchise-based tournament.
Organised by the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA), the league has been created to provide Punjab’s emerging cricketers with a professional platform where they can compete, gain experience and play alongside established players.
The inaugural season features six franchise teams representing different parts of Punjab. The teams are Fazilka Falcons, Ludhiana Lions, Amritsar Soormas, Jalandhar Warriors, Mohali Kings and Bathinda Royals.
The opening match of the tournament is being played between Amritsar Soormas and Mohali Kings at the PCA Stadium in Mohali, marking the beginning of what organisers hope will become an important addition to Punjab’s sporting calendar.
The tournament will continue until September 13, with all matches being played at the PCA Stadium. A total of 27 matches are scheduled, including the knockout stage and the final.
Speaking at the inauguration, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann said the league would provide Punjab’s cricketing talent with greater opportunities to develop and move forward in the sport. He emphasised the importance of giving young players a competitive platform where they can learn from experienced cricketers and perform in front of a larger audience.
The league has been designed along the franchise-based model that has become popular through professional T20 cricket in India. However, its primary focus is on creating a stronger pathway for players emerging from Punjab.
The inaugural season brings together several prominent names associated with Punjab cricket. The six franchise teams have leading Punjab players at the helm, including Shubman Gill, Arshdeep Singh, Abhishek Sharma, Prabhsimran Singh, Ramandeep Singh and Gurnoor Brar.
A large pool of players from across Punjab was considered during the selection process, with 119 players eventually chosen through the auction to represent the six franchises.
For many of these players, the league provides an opportunity to gain experience in a professional franchise environment. Playing alongside established cricketers can also expose younger players to higher standards of preparation, fitness, strategy and match management.
The launch in Mohali is particularly significant because the city has long been one of Punjab’s important cricketing centres. The PCA Stadium has hosted major domestic and international matches and now becomes the exclusive venue for the new T20 league.
The tournament is also expected to give local cricket fans an opportunity to watch some of Punjab’s best emerging and established players in a competitive T20 format closer to home.
Beyond the entertainment aspect, the league is being positioned as part of a broader effort to strengthen Punjab’s sporting ecosystem. A regular professional competition can provide players with more opportunities to compete while also creating greater visibility for cricketing talent from the state.
Chief Minister Mann also linked the promotion of sports with the state’s wider efforts to encourage young people towards healthy and productive activities. Sports have increasingly been presented as an important avenue for engaging youth and building discipline, fitness and teamwork.
For Punjab cricket, the launch represents an attempt to create another level between grassroots cricket and the highest professional competitions. Players who perform consistently in the league could gain greater recognition and potentially strengthen their prospects for selection at higher levels.
The six-team format also gives the tournament a distinctly regional character, with franchises representing different parts of Punjab. This could help supporters develop a connection with teams while giving players from different districts an opportunity to compete under a common professional structure.
The league will now run for the next two weeks, with teams competing for a place in the knockout stages before the championship match on September 13.
The success of the inaugural season will ultimately depend on the quality of competition, player development, fan engagement and the league’s ability to establish itself as a regular platform for Punjab’s cricketing talent. For now, however, the launch at Mohali marks the beginning of a new chapter.
