Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has strongly criticised the arrest of senior Aam Aadmi Party leader and Punjab co-in charge Satyendra Jain, describing it as an attempt to intimidate the political opposition ahead of the Punjab Assembly elections.
Reacting to the development, Mann alleged that investigative agencies were being used as political tools to target opposition leaders. He accused the BJP-led central government of relying on agencies such as the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to put pressure on political opponents.
Mann said such actions were harmful to the democratic process and argued that political disagreements should be settled through public debate and elections rather than through the intimidation of political rivals.
Jain was arrested by the Delhi Government’s Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) in connection with an alleged corruption case concerning the Delhi Jal Board’s sewage treatment plant tender process. The case is separate from the earlier money-laundering proceedings involving Jain.
The arrest has triggered a fresh political confrontation between the Aam Aadmi Party and the BJP. AAP leaders have questioned the timing of the action, particularly with the Punjab Assembly elections approaching, while the BJP has rejected the allegations of political vendetta and maintained that the investigation concerns alleged financial irregularities.
Mann said the action against Jain should be viewed in the wider political context. He alleged that the BJP was attempting to create fear among opposition leaders and weaken political organisations that challenge it.
The Punjab Chief Minister also criticised political opponents who, according to him, had been responsible for decisions that affected the state during their periods in power but were now questioning the AAP government. He said that people who had themselves contributed to Punjab’s problems should not attempt to lecture the state about governance.
Mann argued that this kind of political approach does not strengthen democracy. According to him, political parties should compete on their policies, development work and public record instead of relying on investigative agencies or allegations against their opponents.
The controversy has gained additional significance because of Jain’s organisational role in Punjab. His arrest comes at a time when political parties are beginning to intensify preparations for the next Assembly election, making any action involving senior political leaders particularly sensitive.
AAP leaders have maintained that the case against Jain is politically motivated, while investigating authorities have presented the proceedings as part of a corruption investigation. The allegations against Jain remain subject to the ongoing legal process and have not been finally established by a court.
The issue has also renewed the broader national debate over the functioning and independence of investigative agencies. Opposition parties have repeatedly alleged that central agencies are being used selectively against political rivals, while the government has consistently denied such claims and argued that agencies should be allowed to investigate allegations of wrongdoing without political interference.
For Punjab, Mann’s response is likely to become part of the wider political discourse in the months ahead. The Chief Minister has positioned the issue as one involving not only his party but also the larger question of how political opposition should function in a democracy.
The AAP leadership has indicated that it will continue to raise the issue with the public and challenge what it describes as political intimidation.
With the legal proceedings against Jain continuing, the political battle surrounding his arrest is also expected to intensify. For now, the case has become another point of confrontation between the AAP and BJP, with both sides offering sharply different interpretations of the action.
